The Eat, Move, Sleep, Repeat project was created to address the widespread sedentary lifestyle among young Europeans, an increasingly pressing issue on the continent’s social and health agenda. Young people from Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland and Slovakia gathered in Messina from 10 to 16 October 2023, engaging in a programme that integrated non-formal education with everyday life practices to promote a healthier existence.
The initiative sought to equip participants with the tools to reconsider and improve their lifestyles through understanding and applying integrated healthy habits. The approach adopted was not limited to theoretical sessions, but included direct and practical interactions that allowed them to experience first-hand the benefits of more conscious choices. For example, during the project, activities such as preparing healthy meals allowed young people to directly experience how food affects physical well-being. Similarly, practical sessions on how to read and interpret nutritional labels while shopping transformed a simple visit to the supermarket into an educational experience.
In addition, the project facilitated meetings with nutrition and fitness experts, who shared their knowledge on how to maintain daily routines that are beneficial for physical and mental health. These meetings stimulated deep reflection on the rhythms of daily life and how small changes can lead to significant improvements in the long term.
Another key aspect was the design of physical activities suitable for all levels of ability, demonstrating that physical exercise can be inclusive and varied, adaptable to everyone's needs and interests. These activities not only strengthened awareness of the benefits of regular exercise, but also promoted a sense of community and mutual support among participants.
The culmination of the project was the meeting with the municipality of Milazzo, where the young people presented the results of their commitment. This opportunity allowed them to share their experiences and acquired skills with the local community, highlighting the importance of non-formal education in promoting healthy lifestyles. The event also provided a platform to raise awareness among a wider audience about the importance of integrating physical activity, proper nutrition and adequate rest into daily routines.
"Eat, Move, Sleep, Repeat" offered young Europeans the opportunity to become ambassadors of change towards a healthier lifestyle, demonstrating that non-formal education can be a powerful catalyst for personal and collective transformation.
